1954 AEC Regent III - RT4779

Although registered in 1954, RT 4779 was one of the last RTs to enter service in June 1959, working for ten years at Windsor and Leatherhead garages, before being repainted red in May 1969. A further nine years’ service ended in July 1978 on the last day of RT service in west London on route 140.

The bus deteriorated badly over the following thirty years until rescued for preservation in 2008 by the current owner. A five-year rebuilding programme led by Ian Barratt was interrupted in 2011 to allow the bus to gain a MoT whilst still a skeleton, in which form it attended a number of shows.

Newly-restored, the bus was launched at the Museum’s Spring Gathering in 2013 as a green Country bus, as it was when new. In 2019, it was repainted red, again, and now represents the standard RTs as operated in the 1970s.
